When we opened the Johns Hopkins Center for Transgender Health, we never imagined that in less than four years, we would hit a momentous benchmark: We have cared for 2,500 patients. This incredible milestone has led us to reflect on the journey that got us here. Our goal has always been to offer a multidisciplinary center, where patients of all ages and in all phases of transition can access the absolute best that medicine has to offer for gender affirmation.
When we opened our doors in 2017, we had:
- Two surgeons (one plastic surgeon, one urologist)
- Four providers managing hormone therapy
- One young adult clinic
By our one year anniversary, we had almost 900 patients seeking care. The response from the community has been overwhelming, and it continues to humble each one of us.
In 2021, our team looks a little different:
- Five surgeons (one plastic surgeon, one gynecologist, three urologists)
- One surgical fellow (among the first gender-affirmation surgical fellows in the nation)
- Seven providers managing hormone therapy
- Two laryngologists
- Two speech therapists
- One young adult clinic
- Two physical therapists
We have over 50 partner providers across 11 departments at Johns Hopkins Medicine, all dedicated to providing the best care we possibly can.
So much work and dedication has gone into caring for our 2,500 patients. Just look at the numbers:
- 2,534 people have contacted us for care
- 597 gender-affirming surgeries were performed at Johns Hopkins
- 1,603 new patient appointments were made
- 3,627 follow-up appointments were scheduled
And when you look at what makes 2,500 patients possible, it is even more remarkable. Whether the number is one or 1,000, we appreciate and value the trust you have placed in us. You are our reason for being here, and we strive every day to provide you with the very best that health care has to offer.
